MEAN GIRLS [4K UHD] (2004): "A darker than usual look at the teen comedy, Mean Girls works in a general way but rarely kicks into high gear. The movie offers a gently subversive take on the genre and that’s about it, for it seems clever and amusing but falls short of true greatness." Starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams. Paramount, $25.99, 4/30/2024.
MONOLITH [BLU-RAY] (2022): "Although I like the movie’s concept, Monolith never gets into a groove. It lacks drive and fails to find many interesting paths." Starring Lily Sullivan, Erik Thomson. Well Go, $29.98, 4/23/2024.
THE DEPARTED [4K UHD] (2006): "While it forms an interesting picture, The Departed doesn’t match up with director Martin Scorsese’s best. It entertains and acts as a worthwhile experience, but it doesn’t leave a substantial impression like Scorsese’s more memorable material." Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon. Warner, $33.99, 4/23/2024.
THE GREAT ALLIGATOR [4K UHD] (2013): "As a basic ripoff of Jaws, The Great Alligator fails to find a groove. Dull and dreary, the movie doesn’t provide even the most basic charms." Starring Barbara Bach, Mel Ferrer. Severin, $44.95, 5/28/2024.
THE BEEKEEPER [4K UHD] (2024): "Jason Statham does his Jason Statham thing in The Beekeeper, a fairly ludicrous action flick. While it keeps the viewer moderately engaged, it becomes ridiculous even for its genre." Starring Jason Statham, Emmy Raver-Lampmann. Warner, $39.98, 4/23/2024.
MONSTERS UNIVERSITY [4K UHD] (2013): "12 years after the original Monsters Inc., we got Monsters University, a prequel that let us know more about the characters. Though it comes with decent entertainment value, it never threatens to become memorable, so it keeps us mildly engaged and that’s about it." Starring Billy Crystal, John Goodman. Disney, $39.99, 3/3/2020.
